A patented propulsion system
Dual rotor technology
While other indoor inspection drones use the quadrotor technology with tiny propellers, Flybotix’ patented propulsion system is built around two large coaxial and reclining propellers. This novel configuration, combining the simplicity of multirotors and the efficiency of helicopters, is used for the first time on an indoor inspection drone and allows ASIO to outperform the competition on the three most important specification: extended flight time, reduced noise level and redundancy.
Extended flight time
The flight time is the most important specification of an inspection drone, as it impacts both the missions’ efficiency (and thus your profitability) and the reachable range. ASIO can fly for up to 24 minutes, leading to more than twice the time on site to actually perform the inspection and extends the accessible range by a factor of two.
Reduced noise level
During some missions, like the inspection of large oil tanks, the pilot will be in the same area as the drone and thus affected by its noise – which will be even amplified by the confined environment and the metallic structures. As ASIO uses larger propellers, their rotation speed is much lower compared to quadrotors systems and the generated noise level is only at 80dB at 1m, improving the pilot’s comfort and safety.
The commonly used quadrotor propulsion systems are easy to build but don’t have redundancy. In case an obstacle, like a tube or a hanging cable, enters the protective cage and damages a propeller, the drone loses control and crashes with tremendous damages. ASIO’s coaxial rotor technology ensures a redundancy in the control and propulsion systems, making it able to safely land in case of an incident.
A collision-proof protective cage
When flying in confined environments, and even more when out of sight, the risk of touching surfaces is high. In order to keep your pilots safe and able to operate from the distance, ASIO must resist to collisions. The design of the protective cage protects the propellers from interference with the environment or with the cage itself, ensuring the highest level of safety for your drone, your assets and of course your workers.
In any drone inspection mission, every minute in flight drives your costs down – and keeps your workers safe. This is why every gram counts, and why we put so much effort in optimizing ASIO’s cage by developing an innovative and patented design to keep its weight below 100g (3.5oz), while ensuring its excellent protecting capabilities.
Resilience to collisions and lightweight are two contradictory features, but we’ve been able to reach the best of both. We combined the protective and damping characteristics of an advanced polymer composite used in automotive industry with the stiffness of defense-grade strings. The assembly of these two materials ensures the optimal mechanical resistance to collisions for ASIO.
Easy to replace
Even if the structure of the drone is developed to reduce the risks of damages in case of a collision, unexpected incidents can occur an require to repair the cage. We’ve designed it to make it quick, easy and cheap to replace, to ensure the highest availability rate of ASIO in any circumstances. You will be back in flight in less than five minutes!
A powerful camera system
We know that ASIO will be your inspectors’ deported eyes, and as such we selected the best-in-class camera sensor. Produced by Sony, with a 4K resolution (3840×2160 pixels), it allows you to spot the tiniest details in true colors and to capture 12 megapixels pictures directly during the flight. Be confident in your inspections and don’t ever miss any defect again!
Some defects are invisible to the human eye, but their detection is critical to ensure the assets’ integrity – that’s why we added an infrared sensor by FLIR, the world leader in thermal cameras. It will help you identify cold or hot spots in your equipment, allowing your workers to perform preventative maintenance before any failure happens and thus driving your operational costs down.
You’ve reached the location you need to inspect, but the point of interest is above or under the field of view of the camera? We mounted the camera sensors on a ±90° vertical gimbal system in the front of ASIO, to make sure that no area stays out of sight. And, of course, we made it occlusion-free to make you see everything as if you were on site yourself.
Areas requiring inspection in industrial environments are often in the dark, and in such situation the best camera sensor is useless without a proper lighting. We implemented more than 100 LED to ensure up to 10,000 lumen luminous power, making the darkest places as clear as during the day – and their layout prevents the dust raised by the drone to disturb the camera.
To make sure that your pilots don’t miss anything during their inspection missions, we live stream the high-definition image from the 4K camera directly to the remote control. And in order to go into more details after the flight, everything is stored on board, in full definition, on an ultra-fast micro SD card. You can rely on ASIO to safely spot and store everything during your flight!
A large set of onboard sensors and control algorithms
In indoor, industrial and confined environments, GPS signals are at best inaccurate, but more often completely obstructed by the structures and thus useless. ASIO carries more than a dozen sensors to measure its attitude and position 8000 times per second, making it perfectly stable even in the most complex situations.
Advanced control algorithms
Piloting a flying object is never easy, especially in obstructed environments where the drone can be out of your line of sight. That’s why we integrated advanced flight control algorithms on board ASIO, making it easy to fly in just a few minutes. But as some pilots like to have a full autonomy, you can also disable the assistance easily from the remote.
Wall-lock and wall-scan
Scanning surfaces smoothly, from a constant distance and with a defined angle is key to spot defects and ensure the shortest inspection mission time. In order to simplify your inspector’s life, we developed a wall-lock algorithm, which maintains constant the distance to the wall and the attitude of ASIO, letting your pilot adjust the horizontal speed with a single joystick. And to automate the process even further, the wall-scan feature allows you to tune the scanning parameters, press a button and let ASIO do the job for the whole surface!
Rewind and auto-landing
Your mission objectives are often far away, out of your line of sight. Going there requires your workers knowledge and expertise, but shouldn’t an intelligent drone be able to fly back to a previous position alone? We thought this as well and implemented our Rewind algorithm, making ASIO able to autonomously follow its path backwards! And once its back to its takeoff spot, just press the auto-landing button and ASIO will smoothly land.
Obstacle repulsion, Safety slowdown and Self-righting
We’re dedicated to keep your ASIO and your workers safe, and we thus implemented three key algorithms:
- Obstacle repulsion simulates an invisible sphere surrounding ASIO and continuously analyzes its environment, automatically preventing collisions.
- Safety slowdown ensures that ASIO can stop before hitting an obstacle, even if you missed it and were flying full speed.
- And what happens if a collision still happens and ASIO is upside down? Self-righting makes it oscillate to get it back on its feet, ready to continue its mission!
